Canoe Spring 2017

Project Overview
Prior to modern transportation methods, in Canada and Maine, waterways were the most efficient method of travel. Thus, the birchbark canoe came into effect, lightweight, fast, stable, it was the perfect vehicle for navigating inland rivers and lakes as well as coastal travel. My canoe is a modern iteration of the famous craft.
Design Process and Construction
While the basic plans for the canoe follow traditional building methods, the birchbark canvas was substituted for a modern alternative. We used a heat shrinking fabric and then coated the fabric with a waterproof resin, allowing the canoe to be both cheaper, lighter, and faster. Every aspect of the boat was hand-crafted, including steaming each rib and bending it into place along the frame. I even hand sanded most of the boat. The canoe is fourteen feet long and can comfortably seat two. The project taught me a lot about the difficulties and time-commitment required to build something elegant, learning how to focus on every detail while still maintaining a good pace. The project took about 80 hours to complete.
