Project Overview
2.00B Toy Product Design is an introductory product design class teaching the design process from ideation to a final toy product. Teams of 5-6 students worked throughout the semester to prototype a new toy. 2.00B introduced us many design topics, including ideation, sketch modeling, estimation, sketching, graphic design, drawing and marker rendering, concept development, visual design, prototyping, and presentation. I had a ton of fun on this project, learned a lot, and took a leadership role on my team managing our budget for the semester.
The Design Process
After brainstorming many ideas, our team chose a stuffed animal that can quickly transition into a play tent. Throughout the process we created two models, a "plays like" model that depicted how children would use our toy, and a "looks like" model that was a visual of what we wanted our final iteration to look like. We took our model to the Boston Children's Museum to get feedback from kids on our idea, and used their insight in crafting the final build of our toy. We chose to use a normal stuffed animal with four hidden air tubes and the tent fabric as well as stuffing to keep the toy soft and squishy, indistinguishable from a normal stuffed animal.
Final Presentation "Play-sentation"
We concluded the project with a presentation to almost 500 students, professors, and industry professionals. Our presentation was formatted as a skit, explaining our toy, how to use it, and what it did. The full presentation can be viewed here.
